This is a tiny bracket on the bench near Wilmer Place, which is a typical sort of place to find it. It grows on old wood on building sites, and the bench is painted wood in sun, so exactly right. The rusty colour right to the edge means it has been there a while and is no longer expanding, no functing growing edge. The pores tend towards a radially maze-like pattern. The whole surface is fibrous/hairy.
This is new to Abney and takes the identified total number of fungi and slime molds in Abney Park Cemetery to 297.
Fantastic resource here – really glad to have found this! Found via a search on slime moulds; I think there is one (possibly 2) on a woodchip pile today (Aug 10th) between the Church St entrance and the “Lion”. Numerous small silver-grey fruiting bodies(?), also a pale yellowish jelly patch – no idea what it is (and unfortunately didn’t take a photo). Any i.d. very welcome!
Thanks, Steve
Hi Steve, thanks for that. I had a go at working out what the grey slime mold is, but not yet got there. I may have to put my notes onlnine as an unidentified. I’ll keep an eye out for the jelly patch.
Thanks in return – they are mysterious things! In trying to examine the blob of jelly I disturbed it so what was left may have “decided” to move out…whether it was a different stage of the grey or something separate, I’m not sure; but will make an effort to photograph any future finds now I know someone else might be interested!
